The Southern Mindanao (Davao Region) is located on the southeastern portion of Mindanao. It encloses the Davao Gulf. The name Davao is the Hispanicized pronunciation of daba-daba, the Bagobo word for “fire” (the Cebuano translation is “kalayo”).

Also known as Region XI (Region 11), the region is composed of 4 provinces, namely: Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, and Davao del Sur, 6 cities, 44 municipalities, 1,160 barangays and 11 congressional districts. As of 2010, its population reached a total of 4,468,563 residents.

Davao City, which is a part of Metro Davao and the third most populous metropolitan area in the country, serves as the regional center for the Davao Region (Region 12). With a total land area of 20,244 sq. km (7,816 sq mi), Region XII is inhabited by Davaoeño, Mandayan, Dibabawon, Mansakan, Manobo, Tagalog, Ilokano, and other speakers.

While the region’s economy is predominantly agri-based, it is now developing into a center for agro-industrial business, trade and tourism. Its competitive advantage is in agri-industry as its products, papayas, mangoes, bananas, pineapples, fresh asparagus, flowers, and fish products are exported internationally. The region can be a vital link to markets in other parts of Mindanao, Brunei Darussalam and parts of Malaysia and Indonesia. There is also a growing call center sector in the region, mostly centered in Davao City.
