Local elections will be held in Butuan City, regional center of the CARAGA Region, on May 9, 2016 within the Philippine general election. The voters will elect for the elective local posts in the municipality: the mayor, vice mayor, and councilors.
Butuan City, a first class highly urbanized city in the CARAGA Regions, has a total land area of 816.62 square kilometers. It has a population of 309,709 people, according to the 2010 census.
It is located at the northeastern part of the Agusan Valley, Mindanao, sprawling across the Agusan River. It is bounded to the north, west and south by Agusan del Norte, to the east by Agusan del Sur and to the northwest by Butuan Bay.
It is politically subdivided into 86 barangays.
