This is a directory of official candidates who are running for governor, vice governor, sangguniang panlalawigan (board member), congressman, mayor, vice mayor, and sangguniang bayan (councilor) in Region VI (Western Visayas) for the May 2013 elections.
The Western Visayas region was created from Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo (including its then-subprovince of Guimaras) and Negros Occidental by Presidential Decree No. 1 as part of the Integrated Reorganisation Plan of President Ferdinand Marcos.
Western Visayas is composed of six provinces; Aklan, Antique, Negros Occidental, Capiz, Guimaras and Iloilo and 16 cities making it the region with the highest number of cities.
Also known as Region VI (Region 6), the region consists of 6 provinces, 16 cities, 117 municipalities, 4,051 barangays and 16 congressional districts. As of 2010, its population reached a total of 7,102,438 residents.
Iloilo City, which is the capital city of Iloilo, is the regional center of Region VI (Western Visayas). With a total land area of 20,614 sq. km (7,959 sq mi), Region VI is inhabited by Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, Aklanon, Cebuano, Tagalog, and English speakers.
The languages native to the inhabitants of Western Visayas are: Hiligaynon, spoken in Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Guimaras, and Capiz; Capiznon, spoken in Capiz; Kinaray-a, spoken in Antique and parts of Iloilo, Capiz and Aklan; Akeanon, spoken in Aklan; Malaynon, spoken in Aklan; and Cebuano, spoken in the northern parts of Negros Occidental and its municipalities and cities which are facing Tañon Strait towards Cebu.
Western Visayas has 3 international and 4 domestic airports. Bacolod-Silay International Airport, Iloilo International Airport, and Kalibo International Airport are the international airports. The domestic airports are Evelio Javier Airport (Antique), Godofredo P. Ramos Airport (Caticlan), Kabankalan City Domestic Airport, and Roxas Airport.
